We would like to thank Pilates Insight and Med2000 for providing some of the following information:
Pilates is an exercise technique that has something to offer everyone, from the novice inactive person to the competitive athlete. It is a system of
over 500 controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition the total body. There is an emphasis on the core center of the body,
stabilization of the spine, proper joint alignment, and injury prevention. It redefines the body and redistributes weight, creating functional
strength and shapely curves. It is a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, reduces stress and creates long,
lean muscles without bulking up. Pilates works several muscle groups simultaneously through smooth, continuous motion, with a particular
concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the core (the abdomen, back and pelvic girdle region).
The lessons learned in Pilates transfer over to everyday life, improving awareness in walking, standing, sitting as well as recreational activities
such as gardening, or activities of daily living such as lifting a child. For the athlete, Pilates improves focus and control of movement,
coordination, balance and agility. By strengthening the smaller supporting muscles, the larger mechanical muscles can function more
efficiently.
The focus is on quality of movement rather than quantity, which makes one feel invigorated rather than exhausted after a session. Pilates takes a
balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked and the body works as an efficient, holistic system in sport and daily activity. Pilates is
also considered a proven exercise therapy for alleviation of pain in the back, neck, shoulder, and feet that often originate from improper
movement and poor posture
Pilates is beneficial to aging. Anyone at any age can do Pilates. As we age, our spine becomes compressed due to the constant pull of gravity
and poor posture. Pilates strengthens the muscles that keep the spine lengthened. It also strengthens and elongates the supporting muscles
and aims for balance among specific muscle groups to help maintain space in the joints.
With regular committed Pilates workouts you can expect to:
• Improve strength, flexibility and balance
• Tone and build long, lean muscles without bulk
• Challenge deep abdominal muscles to support the core
• Engage the mind and enhance body awareness
• Condition efficient patterns of movement making the body less prone to injury
• Reduce stress, relieve tension, boost energy through deep stretching
• Restore postural alignment
• Create a stronger, more flexible spine
• Promote recovery from strain or injury
• Increase joint range of motion
• Improve circulation
• Heighten neuromuscular coordination
• Offer relief from back pain and joint stress
• Correct over-training of muscle groups which can lead to stress and injury
• Enhance mobility, agility and stamina
• Compliment sports training and develop functional fitness for daily life activity
• Improve the way your body looks and feels
The fundamental Pilates workout can be performed on a Pilates mat alone, and great results can be achieved through beginner, intermediate
and advanced moves. However, the various equipment pieces such as the Reformer, Trapeze/Cadillac, Ped-a-Pul, and Chair incorporate light
spring resistance that works like concentric and eccentric muscle contractions to safely sculpt, tone and stretch the muscles. The Ladder Barrel
and Spine Corrector are used to stretch and strengthen without the use of springs. Every Breath You Take has a full line of Balanced Body
equipment. See our Photo Gallery
Pilates instructors are highly trained professionals who have invested hundreds of hours studying the technique. They learn over 500 exercises
for both the mat and Pilates equipment. They learn the philosophy and theory behind each movement, spend considerable time observing and
mastering proper form and sequences, and apprentice to fine tune their teaching skills prior to taking a rigorous written and practical exam. They
learn more than just a series of moves. They learn how to assess their students' posture, how to adapt exercises for various body conditions,
and how to customize the optimum Pilates program for each individual.
Equipment Sessions for 2-5 students: These small group sessions are more economical per participant than a private session, but still allow for
plenty of individual assessment, guidance and
monitoring.
Private equipment one-on-one sessions: A personal training session is the most effective way to learn, practice and perfect your Pilates
performance. The instructor devotes undivided attention to your specific needs and develops a custom program for optimum results. Personal
instruction with a Pilates professional is the best way to ensure you are using correct form and technique. Many moves engage deep muscles
difficult to isolate and subtle body adjustments can make the difference between effective and ineffective exercise.
